The Interview Series invites Chinese writers around the world who writes in English to share their work and billingual writing experience. It aims to create a profile archive for diasporic writers.

Rehearsal
Art Book Fair
TO BRING A BOOK FAIR BACK TO BOOKS.
The Rehearsal Art Book Fair, which took place on Sep 15 and 16, 2023, in New York City, sought to explore and present the essence of independent art and literary publishing within highly capitalized and/or censored contexts.
Derived from the French word “rehercier,” “rehearsal” meant “to practice” or “to repeat, to understand anew.” We invited independent presses, editions, collectives, and individuals from both local New York and around the world to join this fair. Additionally, a collection of curated Samizdat from mainland China was exhibited for the very first time. We appreciated the continuous practices of bookmaking as personal rehearsals and revolutions.
The book fair happened at the theater space and bathhouse-converted classrooms of University Settlement (184 Eldridge Street, Lower East Side), a historic community hub that had been supporting immigrant workers and low-income families since the 19th century.
The fair was co-organized voluntarily by Bungee Space (a photography, image study- and image criticism-focused art book store based in New York) and Accent Sisters (a speakeasy literature bookstore and publishing studio based in New Jersey).

Poetry Award
In the late spring of 2021, sponsored by the British Council , Accent Society launched a five-month international online poetry residency program, in collaboration with Jenny Niven and renowned Scottish poets Don Paterson, Jen Hadfield, and Sophie Collins. We have hosted nearly 20 interdisciplinary poetry workshops, roundtables, and collective creative activities. Topics include Sign Language Poetry, Poetry and Art Curation, Electronic Music and Sound Poetry, and Poetry and Video Game Design, etc. During this period, the resident artists have together explored the craft and enchanting power of poetry. Despite the pandemic isolation, the online residency has provided an incubator for community engagement, fostering friendships, collaborations, and poetic kinships.
As the grand finale of the residency program, the British Council has sponsored this Accent Accent International Poetry Award. The Award seeks submissions from writers, translators and artists across the globe. It aims to discover new creative voices, push the boundaries of poetry, and encourage cross-cultural engagement and radical hospitality. The award comprises four categories: Experimental Poetry Translation, Video Performance Poetry, Ekphrastic Poetry, and Emerging Voice. One winner and five honorary mentions will be selected for each of these categories. Each winner will be awarded a prize of ¥1000 and a candle trophy (meaning ‘what is to give light must endure burning’) . In addition, all the winning works and honorary mentions will be presented in the future publications (in Chinese and/or English language), international poetry festivals, exhibitions, and promotional events hosted by Accent Society and its partner organizations including Push the boat out poetry festival in Edinburgh and Lightyears Poetry magazine in China.

In the late spring of 2021, sponsored by the British Council Connect Through the Culture Programme, Accent Society launched a five-month international online poetry residency program, in collaboration with Jenny Niven, the director of Push the Boat Out Festival. During the residency, Accent Society has hosted multiple poetry workshops for more than 20 participating interdisciplinary artists, taught by the renowned Scottish poets Don Paterson, Jen Hadfield, and Sophie Collins. In addition, based on their respective creative backgrounds and practices, the facilitators, and producers from the Accent Society team, including Jiaoyang Li, Consuela Sufei Yang, Shangyang Fang, Na Zhong and Xiaoyang Lin, have engaged the residency participants in nearly 20 interdisciplinary poetry workshops, roundtables, and collective creative activities. Their topics include Sign Language Poetry, Poetry and Art Curation, Electronic Music and Sound Poetry, and Poetry and Video Game Design, etc. During this period, the resident artists have together explored the craft and enchanting power of poetry.
