Ever realized that your Mandarin has a little bit of a “Plastic Mandarin” (塑料普通话) accent? I didn’t until I was 17. At first, I felt a little self-conscious about it, but friends told me it’s cute and cool. They even curious about how to make their Mandarin or English sound a little more plastic, and has the musical tones of Changsha (长沙). So this time come join me! Once you are with a Hunanese person, your accent will be changed life-time! This is not a formal class, just a fun gathering about dialect, subculture, and street food.

𓄂 What we’ll cover:

Plastic Mandarin Pronunciation Tips: Learn how to stretch out sounds and hit the high notes in a natural Changsha way!

Hunan Food typology: From "Duo La Jiao" (剁辣椒, chopped chili) to "Zi Su" (紫苏, perilla), we’ll dive into the mouthwatering local vocabulary. You’ve gotta know “Chou Dou Fu” (臭豆腐, stinky tofu), "Guang Tou Fen" (光头粉, a noodle dish), and "Xiao Long Xia" (小龙虾, crayfish).

Historical Tidbits: Why does everyone talk about Ma Wang Dui’s Xin Zhui (马王堆辛追娭毑)?

Children’s Song: Let’s vibe to Changsha’s classic rhyme “Yue Liang Ba Ba” (月亮粑粑, Moon Cake), and feel the cadence of the dialect in action.

After party will be hosted at the chosen best Hunan restaurant in New York City announced later in class (the restaurant owner will also join us) !

See you on January 12th at Accent Sisters—
